ARTIST STATEMENT:
As a child of an abusive home, and then a fatherless one, I have been very intimate with some of the dysfunctions that seem to define our society. Not surprisingly, I had spent time in therapy as a child and it was through this experience that I became fascinated with the psychoanalytical process. Later on, I utilized this process as an aid in interpreting the world and have learned to cope with my own psychological scars through the ritualistic act of art making. I have depended on this so much, in fact, that the act itself has become necessary in order to maintain a sense of wellbeing. In satiating this need, I have focused my work on interpreting and understanding the pathologies of modern Americans, focusing specifically on the conditions that result from being a surviving member of this culture. The images I have included cover a number of related topics, such as: the isolation that springs from an abusive home, the antithetical emotional relationships that can result from a single mother-son dynamic, the legally prescribed addictions that mask the underlying dysfunction of the society which breed them, and finally the narcissism that has become a socially accepted norm.
