ARTIST STATEMENT:

In my paintings I am trying to create a new reality based on the subtle influence of fantasy. I paint lighthearted subject matters that are influenced from nature, friends, family and travel. These subjects seem to have more of a folk tale feeling or a dream quality.

Growing up in the country has given me a love of color and nature, which are two things very prominent in my work. In nature there are multiple colors and shapes which I intensify and flatten. I use the repetition of shapes and color to achieve balance and harmony.

For me, the complexity does not come from intricate rendering, but rather thoughtfully placed color, and subtle tonal changes. I try to create depth by color change, rather from accurate perspective. When I come up with an idea for painting, I already have one or two main colors in mind. I work best by laying down these colors first, and then leaving the rest up to intuition.
