ARTIST STATEMENT: My name is Shelley Dedman. I am a 19-year-old philosophy student located in San Diego. I am fascinated by the small details we don't take the time to notice- the sharp edges of individual blades of grass on a Spring day, the subtle shimmer of a dime dropped on the ground in the blazing sun, the tiny features of insects we swat away. I use the term 'macropainting' to describe what I do, which I define as taking small objects and blowing them up on a canvas. In contrast to traditional subject matter, macropainting focuses on taking the miniature and enlarging it to show the fine detail, as opposed to taking a landscape or a larger object and bringing it down in size to fit the canvas. I work in acrylics, having recieved my first tube of paint when I was 13 by my granny who painted as well, but due to a gradual loss of her sight, decided to give me her tools.
I am self-taught and just begining to take painting seriously. I love color and light. I also love turtles. Are the two related? Possibly.
